Grade 9 Natural Science

4 Seasons

Science is a discipline that sustains enjoyment and curiosity about the world and natural phenomena. It deals a lot with links to related topics to form understanding of nature and connectedness in Natural Sciences.

Natural Sciences lays the basis of further studies in more specific science disciplines, such as Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Earth Sciences or Agricultural Sciences. It prepares learners for active participation in a democratic society that values human rights and promotes responsibility towards the environment.

Natural Sciences can also prepare learners for economic activity and self-expression through the knowledge strands used to organise the content such as Life and Living, Matter and Materials, Energy and Change and Planet Earth and Beyond.

  • The periodic table

    Episode 1

The periodic table is a tabular array of the chemical elements organised by atomic number, from the element with the lowest atomic number, hydrogen, to the element with the highest atomic number, oganesson. The atomic number of an element is the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom of that...

  • Compounds

    Episode 2

In chemistry, a compound is a substance that results from a combination of two or more different chemical element s, in such a way that the atom s of the different elements are held together by chemical bonds that are difficult to break. In this lesson we take a look at compounds and how they for...

  • Chemical reactions

    Episode 3

Chemical Reaction is a process that occurs when two or more molecules interact to form a new product(s). In this lesson we look at chemical reactions and the different ways that we can use to represent chemical reactions like diagrams symbols and word equations.

  • Balancing chemical equation

    Episode 4

If there are no inequalities, the chemical equation is said to be balanced. In this lesson we look at the balancing of chemical equations and why it is important. We also learnt how to balance the equations.

  • Acids, bases and pH values

    Episode 5

Solutions are classified as acidic or basic based on their hydrogen ion concentration relative to pure water and the pH scale is used to rank solutions in terms of acidity or basicity (alkalinity). In this lesson we investigate acids and bases and the differences between them. We also look at th...

  • Reactions of metals with oxygen

    Episode 6

When a metal reacts with oxygen, a metal oxide forms. The general equation for this reaction is: metal + oxygen → metal oxide. In this lesson we take a look at the reactions that take place between metals and oxygen and the products that form when these types of reactions take place.

  • Reactions of non-metals with oxygen

    Episode 7

Non metals reacts with oxygen to form oxides. We take a look at the different reactions between non-metals and oxygen and the products that form during these types of reactions.

  • Neutralisation reactions

    Episode 8

A neutralisation reaction is when an acid and a base react to form water and a salt and involves the combination of H+ ions and OH- ions to generate water.

  • Reactions of acids with metals and metal oxides

    Episode 9

When an acid is treated with a metal oxide, a salt and water are obtained. In the lesson we take a closer look at the reactions that take place between acids and metals and acids and metal oxides. We look at the general reaction and products and we also take a closer look at some examples.

  • Reactions of acids with metal hydroxides and metal carbonates.

    Episode 10

A metal hydroxide forms when a metal reacts with water. Metal Carbonates are a type of base that produce a salt, water and carbon dioxide when they react with an acid. We take a closer look at the reactions that occur when we react acids with metal hydroxides and acids with metal carbonates. We ...
